Olympic champions advance to SWATCH Finals gold medal match

Toronto, Canada, September 17, 2016 - Rio Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany continued to come back from two pool play setbacks to win their third-straight match here Saturday morning by defeating defending SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals champions Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca of Brazil in a two-set semi-final match.

With their 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) win in 38 minutes over Talita and Larissa, Ludwig and Walkenhorst have now won five of six FIVB World Tour meetings with the Brazilians.  Win No. 4 for the Germans in the series was in the semi-final match at the 2016 Rio "Summer" Games.  The lone win for Talita and Larissa in the series was a gold medal victory last October at the 2015 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals in the United States on Fort Lauderdale Beach in south Florida.

Recap - SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals - AudioLaura Ludwig on the improved play the past four years by the European women's teams on the FIVB World Tour as her team was the first pair from their continent to win an Olympic medal - "I guess maybe that the Europeans changed a little bit the philosophy going for more technique and athletic-wise they improved a lot and the individual teams are really strong as a team. It’s improved in the last two or three years a lot. The Brazilians and the Americans love playing on the beach, they grew up there. The Americans have this great mentality, fighting, competitive mentality that we had to kind of learn in a different way."We are doing it way more professionally and also statistic-wise and scouting and coaches, a lot of cameras."
