This is the first FIVB World Tour series meeting between the two teams. Gallay and Klug won the 2015 PanAmerican Games gold medal in Toronto. Both pairs competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with the Giombini and Menegatti placing ninth and Gallay and Klug placing 19th. Gallay and Klug defeated Rio gold medal winners Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst Thursday in SWATCH Finals pool play.
