USA take lead after sensational Week 2 of VNL

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 24, 2018 - USA lead a group of five teams at the top of the 2018 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League standings - though after a week there's not a single side left undefeated. The reigning world champions, alongside Brazil, Serbia, Turkey and the Netherlands are all on 5-1 records, with the Americans enjoying a slight lead on points.

It was an exceptional week of volleyball across the board, with some very high scoring from several stars, with the powerhouses that sometimes struggled in Week 1 recovering and providing some sensational action as the VNL picks up momentum.

Brazil also scored three wins in Week 2 and follow USA closely in the VNL standings.

These are the highlights of Week 2:

• USA registered three straight-set wins over Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, shooting to the top of the standings.
• The Netherlands and Turkey suffered their first defeats of the season, to USA and Brazil respectively, leaving no team undefeated after two weeks of play.
• Italy beat Germany and followed up with another win over Korea, and the Dominican Republic shut out Argentina for their first wins of the season - leaving Argentina the sole winless team after Week 2.
• Poland's Malwina Smarzek made the 'Over 30s' list not once, but twice, pounding China with 35 points in her side's 3-2 win over the Olympic champions and topping that two days later with a tournament-high of 38 in the defeat 2-3 to Thailand.
• Tijana Boskovic of Serbia also entered the 'Over 30s' club twice with 30 points in the European champions' 3-1 win over Thailand and another 32 against China.
• Poland served a tournament-high 14 aces in their win over China.

Poland's Malwina Smarzek scores one of her 35 points against China in Macau.
