Lausanne, Switzerland, May 24, 2018 - USA lead a group of five teams at the top of the 2018 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League standings - though after a week there's not a single side left undefeated. The reigning world champions, alongside Brazil, Serbia, Turkey and the Netherlands are all on 5-1 records, with the Americans enjoying a slight lead on points.
It was an exceptional week of volleyball across the board, with some very high scoring from several stars, with the powerhouses that sometimes struggled in Week 1 recovering and providing some sensational action as the VNL picks up momentum.
Brazil also scored three wins in Week 2 and follow USA closely in the VNL standings.These are the highlights of Week 2:
• USA registered three straight-set wins over
Japan,
the Netherlands and
Belgium, shooting to the top of the standings.
• The Netherlands and Turkey suffered their first defeats of the season, to
USA and
Brazil respectively, leaving no team undefeated after two weeks of play.
• Italy
beat Germany and followed up with another
win over Korea, and the Dominican Republic
shut out Argentina for their first wins of the season - leaving Argentina the sole winless team after Week 2.
• Poland's Malwina Smarzek made the 'Over 30s' list not once, but twice, pounding China with
35 points in her side's 3-2 win over the Olympic champions and topping that two days later with a
tournament-high of 38 in the defeat 2-3 to Thailand.
• Tijana Boskovic of Serbia also entered the 'Over 30s' club twice with
30 points in the European champions' 3-1 win over Thailand and
another 32 against China.
• Poland served a tournament-high
14 aces in their win over China.
