Mexico, Puerto Rico claim first tickets to U19 Worlds at Pan Am Cup

 
Monterrey, Mexico, March 24, 2017 – Colombia and Puerto Rico have joined Mexico and Chile as semifinalists at the U19 Boys’ Pan American Cup following victories over Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, respectively, on Thursday.

As the top two qualified teams from NORCECA, Mexico and Puerto Rico have secured spots to the 2017 FIVB Boys’ World Championship to be held in Bahrain from August 18 to 27. The top ranked team between Chile and Colombia also will be granted of a ticket to the world event.



In Friday’s semifinals, Mexico will face Colombia and Puerto Rico will be pitted against Chile.

Colombia held off a big comeback by the Dominican Republic to claim a 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12) marathon victory that lasted 2 hours and 24 minutes. Raul Rivas and Oliver Murillo led the South American squad with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Dominican Bayron Valdez had a terrific offensive performance with 41 points but could not prevent the defeat as his team committed 44 errors to 24 by the winners. Colombia held a 18-10 advantage in blocks while Dominican Republic had a 69-44 margin in attacks.


Puerto Rico qualified to the FIVB Boys U19 World Championship alongside Mexico as the top two NORCECA teams.

In the other quarterfinal, Pedro Molina and Gabriel Garcia finished with 20 and 16 points, respectively, to lead Puerto Rico to a 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-20) victory over Costa Rica. The winners held 7-3 and 9-6 in aces and blocks.

Earlier on Thursday, Jamaica defeated Peru 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) in 68 minutes. The loss relegated Peru to ninth place while Jamaica moved to a match for 7-8 positions against Nicaragua to open Friday’s actions at Nuevo Leon Gymnasium.
