Forrer & Verge-Depre advance with elimination win over Canada

Toronto, Canada, September 16, 2016 - Switzerland's Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre snapped a four-match losing streak to Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas by eliminating the Canadians here mid-day Friday at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals on Polson Pier.

Friday's match was the fifth FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams and the first since May 2015 as Forrer and Verge-Depre posting a 2-0 (24-22, 21-19) in 41 minutes over Broder and Valjas.

With the win, the Swiss pair will play Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude of Germany in a Friday afternoon quarter-final match.

Jamie Broder - "It was a good game, there were a lot of good rallies. The Swiss girls are a great team and I’m proud of the things we did on the court today. We tightened up our game and played well. It was just kind of a difference of inches at the end.

"There is definitely a lot to be proud of. We made tons of improvements over the last four years together."

Kristina Valjas - "Disappointed this is how we ended the season. We were hoping to get one win in this tournament and maybe go a little deeper and win some more money because there’s lots up for grabs. But it’s an honor to even be here, it’s an honor to be playing in our home country in front of our family and friends and despite the losses, I’m so proud and so happy to be here.

"We achieved our goal making the Olympics and representing Canada there. That was the big dream. We couldn’t be happier. We did it."

Anouk Verge-Depre - "Today was not easy. We really had to go point by point and fight for every ball. We were back in the first, we didn’t find our rhythm at first and I think we really kept together as a team and fought hard. That was the difference maybe at the end."

Isabelle Forrer - "We just take it point by point. We try to do what learned all those years, just keeping the rhythm. It’s the end of the season so it’s tough when everybody is mentally pretty tough."
