Lausanne, Switzerland, June 20, 2019 – The Executive Board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has today approved the proposed inclusion of beach volleyball in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games official sports programme.
The proposal was put forward by the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee and must also be accepted by CGF Members. If approved, the final announcement will be made later this summer.
Following the announcement, the FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:
“The FIVB is delighted to learn the good news from the CGF Executive Board meeting. Following the huge success of beach volleyball at the previous edition of the Games in Gold Coast in 2018, we are confident that beach volleyball will once again be a great spectacle for sports fans at Birmingham 2022.
“We now await the final decision by CGF membership and would like to take this opportunity to thank the CGF and its members for their consideration.”
Beach volleyball made its debut at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and was enjoyed by athletes and spectators alike. Australia's Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann won the men's event on home sand while Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan were victorious in the women's competition.
